On Sunday morning, we slept in as long as we could. Seems like now we're programmed to get up early. I didn't really sleep well because I kept waking up at various times during the night and thinking I need to go check on the boys. At home, whenever I wake up during the night, I always go in and check on both of them. Boone sleeps in a sleep sack right now, but Fenn always ends up out from under his blanket so I'll cover him back up.
I forgot to mention something about dinner last night in the Part 2 post. I mentioned that we talked and thought about the boys a lot {but not the whole time}. We did, however, have a lengthy conversation about when to call and check on them. "Should we call BEFORE they go to bed and tell them goodnight?" But then that might upset them and make it harder for Todd and Angie to get them down for the night. Or... "Should we wait until after we think they've gone to bed and then just ask Todd and Angie how things went?" We opted for the latter, concluding that would be the best thing for all involved. And it turns out that was probably the right decision because they both went to bed pretty easily. Cousin Jesse even played his guitar for them before they went to bed.
So we got ourselves ready and headed out to breakfast. We found a cute little place with outdoor seating. And we, of course, called again to see how the night went. I think Fenn only woke up one time very briefly, but otherwise they both slept through the night. In fact, they both slept in a little late. When we called, they were already working on packing up all the boys' stuff so they could head over to Hilton Head. Dan and I walked around and did a little shopping for Christmas ornaments and Salty Dog t-shirts for the boys. Then we went to the grocery store to get a few things for lunch and dinner. We got back to the condo and before we knew it, Todd, Angie, and Seth were arriving with the boys. We found out that Fenn never once asked for us! But actually I'm glad because it makes it easier when you know they weren't really missing you. And he got to ride the 4-wheeler with his cousin Jesse again that morning. Anyway, we could tell they were both glad to see their mommy and daddy. And we were really happy to see them, too. It was time for Fenn's nap, so we let him play a little and then started working on getting him down. He was so excited, and then also being in a different place didn't help matters. He ended up taking quite a while to finally fall asleep. Which means his nap was going to cut into our beach time later that afternoon. {I love this next photo, even though it's a little out of focus. Why is it that so many of my favorites are out of focus?}
By the time Fenn finally got up from his nap and we got everyone ready for the beach, it was 4:30 when we got out there. Surprisingly {extremely surprising, considering how much Fenn loves the water}, Fenn was a little hesitant about the ocean at first. So daddy decided to run and jump in the waves and generally just act a little goofy to demonstrate how much fun it was to Fenn. I think Dan was acting like a monster in this photo.
Then Dan took Fenn and walked out into the waves to give Fenn a chance to get used to it. When Dan tried to put him down, he immediately pulled up his feet.
But within a few minutes after that, he was loving the water and running around all over the place. He just needed to see that it was okay.
Boone hung out with his Aunt Angie, while Fenn built sand castles with daddy, Uncle Todd, and Seth.
And daddy even took over the camera duties so I could get in on the fun with Fenn. In the next photo, check out Fenn's hands. He was grabbing fistfuls of sand from the sand castle, running back to the ocean, and throwing the sand back into the ocean.
In the next photo, if you'll look closely, you can see the ripples on the water and water splashing up where he just threw in some sand.
Boone got in on the fun, too. Well, not really. He wasn't very fond of getting his feet dipped in the water. Hopefully he'll love it next year, though.
We only had a little more than an hour to play on the beach. Then it was time to go inside and get baths so we could do a quick photo session back out on the beach. We rushed in, cleaned up, and got back out to the beach around 7:00 p.m. We were quickly losing light. Todd, Angie, and Seth were all so sweet to stick around and help us with the photo session. They still had to drive back to Rincon and then the next day was a work day. We got several good photos, but I didn't have time to get creative and do anything different.
And I should have been watching the camera's shutter speed, because by the time I realized it, some of the photos were looking grainy and I needed to change to my portrait lens which does a better job of shooting in low light. By the time we got some family shots, the boys were getting hungry and tired and completely over the whole photo session.
So I never did get any great shots of them by themselves or of the two of them together. I did, however, get a few good shots of Todd and Angie, Dan and me, and one of Seth and Boone together (the oldest grandchild and the youngest grandchild).
Todd, Angie, and Seth headed home. And we got the boys fed and down for the night. Dan and I had a nice dinner and then watched part of Marley and Me. We were so tired, we just couldn't stay up for the whole thing. {And we still need to finish watching it!} The next morning, we packed up and headed home. We even shaved an hour off of the trip and made it back in about 8 hours. We had a great time, but wish we would have had more time. We were trying to pack a lot of stuff into a very short trip. But that's all the time we had this year because of Dan's schedule. Next year, we'll probably go on vacation in either May or June and we'll take a full week. It's just too hard to try and go between Dan's September 15th and October 15th tax extension deadlines.
If you want to see lots more photos from the trip, look over in the right-hand column of the blog under "More Photos of Fenn and Boone". Then click on the link for "Summer Vacation - September 2009".
