Last weekend was a fun and busy weekend for us. On Saturday morning, we joined the YMCA near our house, and that afternoon we went to Noah's 2nd birthday party. {Noah is one of Fenn's classmates.} And then on Sunday, we spent about 3 hours at the Y pool. At the birthday party, they had a bounce house, a slip 'n slide, and a backyard playground set complete with a curved slide. As you can see in the photos, Fenn had a blast on the slip 'n slide with Noah and Mary Frances (another classmate). The boy does love the water! Anytime... anywhere! Since Fenn really didn't know how to get a running start and dive onto the slide, his daddy had to help him slide. But believe me, he always went willingly.
I wanted to take a few minutes and write about some of the things Fenn is doing and saying now. I'm going to have to stop doing this soon because he is learning new things so fast that I can't keep up anymore. Or I guess I'll just have to hit the highlights going forward. I have actually had a little list going for a few weeks now where I'll jot down things he does or says as a reminder to myself. His vocabulary has virtually exploded overnight. He can identify so many things correctly now. You may or may not be able to understand him, but if you know what he's talking about, you can tell he's using the correct word for it. Here's a little sample of what he's saying now:
:: apple sauce {ap poo SCHLAAUUH}. Notice the emphasis on 'sauce'. I believe apple sauce is his first two-word combination. And right now, apple sauce seems to be one of his favorite things to eat. In fact, his first three-word combination is "more apple sauce". Thank goodness they have different flavored ones now (strawberry, blueberry, etc.). They're all yummy!
:: sunscreen {shuh schwee}. He recognizes the bottle, calls it by name, and willingly comes to you to let you put some on him because he knows it means he's going outside to play. Smart kid!
:: yes {YAAAAHH}. Think swedish accent {I'm Inga from Sweden.}. It's hysterical! He'll also nod his head in an exaggerated manner when saying yes.
:: Elmo {uhhl MO}. He used to put an 'm' on the front and it came out more like 'meuhl MO', so I think it's kind of neat that he has corrected himself.
:: amen {AHHHH mah}. This is so sweet. We have a little book of bedtime prayers we read every night. Each page has a short story and then a corresponding prayer on the opposite page. When we're done, he says "AHHHH mah!".
:: Ashley {ash LEE}. Ashley is one of his teachers at school. When he says her name, it actually sounds pretty darned close to the way it should sound. His other teachers are Nicole and Heather. He'll say 'cole' for Nicole, but he won't say Heather yet.
:: vacuum cleaner {awn MOWah}. OK... that's not really correct. He knows what a lawn mower is, but when he sees a vacuum cleaner (which isn't often around this house!), he calls it a lawn mower. He's not really that far off! They are kind of similar when you think about it.
:: A few more words are please {spheez} (or something like that), tree {chwee}, up {op}, and help {hep}.And here are a few things he's doing now that I think are cute. Heck, I'm his mommy, so I think everything he does is cute. Well... almost everything! I'm not real fond of when he decides to sit down at the bottom of the steps at school (and not get up) when I have Boone in his car seat, 2 diaper bags, and am having to hold Fenn's hand because I don't want him to get away from me in the parking lot. If I put anything down, I'll have to let go of Fenn in order to pick them back up!
:: To come home after picking the boys up at school, I have to drive down Kingston Pike. {For those who don't live here, it's kind of the main road that takes you almost anywhere you need to go in our part of Knoxville.} I usually turn off of Kingston Pike the first chance I get to avoid the afternoon traffic and cut across our neighborhood. But when I start to turn, Fenn starts saying "Noooooo... Nooooo". I can't figure out why he's saying that. Maybe he just likes staying on the main road so he can watch all the cars going by. Who knows???
:: A few weeks ago he started grabbing our hand and pulling us to wherever he wanted us to go with him. I just think that's one of the sweetest things ever!
:: We think he might be left-handed. Right now he is favoring his left hand, but we know he could change at anytime over the next couple of years. Or maybe he'll be ambidextrous like his mommy.
:: He is doing a pretty good job eating with a spoon and fork. He can usually get at least something to his mouth before dumping the food. He has a tendency to turn the spoon or fork sideways right before he gets it to his mouth. But he is improving! That apple sauce is slippery!
:: Another thing... when he's eating, he'll sometimes stuff his mouth if he really likes something (i.e., cheese, crackers, pasta pickups). And then he'll ask for more. I'll tell him to chew it up and swallow first, then he can have more. He'll do this little exaggerated chewing motion where he bobs his head up and down. Then he'll open his mouth and let you see that it is empty.
:: After a bath, we'll put him up on the changing table and put lotion on him before getting him dressed in his PJs. He likes to have a little lotion in his hand. The only problem is that instead of rubbing it in, he'll eat it. And then he'll ask for more!
:: He can match several colors. He has a puzzle that has pieces shaped like music notes, and each 'note' is a different color. The hole in the puzzle where each piece should go has the same color. He can put the pieces back in place. But he can also point to some of the colors when you ask him to do so. Distinguishing between red and pink is a little difficult, though. But he knows green, blue, and yellow... and sometimes even gets red and orange correct.
:: And I saved the best for last. Several weeks ago, we started putting him in "time out" whenever he acts out and/or does something we've told him not to do. He gets one warning, and one warning only! We're not going to be those kind of parents who keep making threats over and over and over ("If you do that one more time, you're going to time out.") and never actually follow through. Sorry if you're one of those parents. But we're just not playing that game. The first time we did it, he knew exactly what to do so we assumed he had already been in time out at school. I have to say he is so cute when he is in time out. We have a hard time keeping ourselves from laughing. He'll sit there and be completely quiet. And he'll even look straight at the wall (we have his stool in a corner and make him face the corner). Every once in a while, he'll turn around and look at us. But he doesn't say anything. He just waits until we tell him that time out is over. One time, he put himself in time out after hearing us say the word. I think we had just told him he was going to time out if he did something again. I guess he knew he'd slip up and do it again, so he might as well go ahead and get the time out over with. We had to tell him he had not done anything wrong and didn't have to sit in time out.
I sure do love that child!
This is Boone at Two Months. This is the second installment in the "12-month onesie" series. He's growing so much and his personality is coming out more and more. He smiles a lot and now coos at us, too. He especially likes it when we sing to him. He really starts talking then! We are now down to only one feeding in the middle of the night. We give him his bedtime bottle between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. and then get him to bed shortly thereafter. He has been sleeping until around 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. Come on Boone... you're so close. Just a couple hours more so mommy and daddy can sleep all night! He is really easy in so many ways. Just like with Fenn, we usually put him to bed still awake and he goes to sleep on his own. Having our kids sleep in the bed with us is just not our thing. We value our sleep too much. But that's not to say we'll never let them climb in bed with us, because that can be really sweet. We just don't want to make it a regular, all night thing. Boone went to the doctor for his two-month checkup yesterday. He had to get his first round of shots. But he was a trooper and only cried for a few seconds. Three sticks in the leg is enough to make anyone cry.
These are his stats at two months (or 9 weeks) old:
Weight: 12 lbs. 14 oz. (75th %)
Height: 23.5" (69th %)
Head: 38.9 cm (27th %) Dan actually thinks the nurse didn't get a great measurement
Compare this to his stats at 3 weeks old:
Weight: 9 lbs. 12.5 oz. (71st %)
Height: 21.5" (70th %)
Head: ??? (39th %)
The little stinker gained 3 pounds in 6 weeks and grew 2 inches! It is hard to believe he is already two months old. If you want to see how he has changed over the last month, look over in the right-hand column of the blog under "More Photos of Boone". There's a link to his 12-month onesie photos. His face and legs have filled out a lot more over the last month.
Up until a couple of weeks ago, I had not been able to do a blog post since Cinco de Mayo! With the impending birth of our second child in mid-May, we got busy and I just didn't have time to sit down at the computer much. Then once Boone arrived, I really didn't have time to blog. Needless to say, I got WAY behind on my blog. At one point, I was over a month behind. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been working on catching up every chance I had and have postdated about 26 blog entries. It goes all the way back to May 9th. I've done so many posts that you'll have to click on "Older Posts" to see all of them. I am proud to say I am finally caught up! Let's hope I can keep it this way. And since I don't like to do a post without a photo, here's a sweet photo of Boone during a recent bath.
The Loebach's came for a visit over the July 4th weekend (Dan's sister Debbie, Mark, Piper, & Sydney). This was going to be their first time to meet Boone.
They arrived on Friday afternoon and we just hung out around the house and enjoyed a great dinner that evening. Everyone had a chance to hold Boone, including the girls. Sydney was the first one to hold him (because she had been saying that's the way it had to be ever since Boone was born). {That's actually Piper holding Boone in the photo above.} It only took Fenn about 5 - 10 minutes to warm up to everyone. He was so cute hugging the girls.
After all the hugs and kisses, the three of them played non-stop until dinnertime. Basically, Fenn ran around the house and the girls followed him. He seemed to be totally amused by this.
The next morning, we went to the pool at their hotel. We were glad to have this chance to get Fenn in a swimming pool since his last swim lesson was the weekend before. We're planning to join the YMCA soon so we can use their pool. It is only a few blocks from our house. Fenn had a great time swimming with Piper and Sydney.
And he even demonstrated his new trick... retrieving weighted rings off the bottom of the pool. He learned to do this in his last swim lesson. Of course, he can't swim yet, so his dad has to take him down. But he knows to grab the rings off the bottom... and even grabbed two rings at the same time.

Boone enjoyed going to the pool, too. Even though he didn't get in the water, he still got decked out in his new swimsuit.
Late that afternoon, we went to Chuck E. Cheese's for an early dinner. Dan came up with the idea to go earlier in the week. And he was soooo excited about going... he kept talking about it all week. I didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't as great as he was thinking it would be. But the important thing is that Fenn had a good time. He rode some of the kiddie rides, including this one with Mr. Chuck E. Cheese himself. {It takes a photo while you're riding.}
He even played skee ball. Yes, that's my son cheating at skee ball!
One of Fenn's favorite things was the little basketball game. I think he mostly just liked watching the balls come out at the bottom whenever you started another game. We ended the evening with the photo sketch machine {see first photo at the top of this post and also below photo of Piper & Fenn}.
Sunday morning, we headed back over to the pool for one more quick swim. The Loebach's headed out shortly afterward and Fenn took a nice long nap. That afternoon, the four of us headed over to Sevierville to do a little outlet shopping. It was a great weekend with lots of fun. Dan and I actually felt somewhat rested after the weekend because the girls kept Fenn entertained so well. Piper did a great job of keeping an eye on Fenn and stopping him when he was about to do something he wasn't supposed to do (i.e., throw something at Boone, fall on Boone, etc.). I'm thinking she has a future in babysitting in a few more years.
Boone's first day of school was today. {We call it school instead of daycare so the boys won't think school is anything different once they start "real" school in a few years.} Dan is the one who takes the boys to school each morning, and I do the picking up in the afternoon. But this morning, I went along, too... just because that's what mommy's do. I had to be there the first time he got dropped off! It was an uneventful day... no problems. They said he did great. And I think they're already in love with him there. As for Fenn, I think he was a little confused about why Boone was going with him. I actually think he didn't like having him in his territory today. Although they're in different classrooms, the teachers took Fenn over to visit Boone a couple of times throughout the day. And they also took some of his classmates to visit Boone. Here's Boone right before leaving for school. He looks excited, doesn't he? It kind of looks like he's strapped in, about to take off, and giving the thumbs up to signal he's ready.
Over the weekend, I got some more photos of Boone smiling. He has the sweetest little smile, I think. We had a good weekend. Mommy and Daddy had an adult night out. Dan's office had a cookout at his partner's home on Saturday. Fenn's teacher, Miss Ashley, came over to babysit. It was nice getting out and enjoying some adult conversation. The cookout was planned as a "kid free" event so that everyone could just enjoy the night without having to chase our kids around.
Also over the weekend, we were able to successfully get Boone down for the night between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. a couple of nights. That was a first. Normally, we would feed him around that time and he would still demand to be held and would stay awake. But this time we were able to put him in his crib for a few hours until the next feeding. And that allowed us to have a couple of hours to ourselves before turning in for the night. We're a long way from Boone sleeping completely through the night without needing to be fed, but this is a great first step. We still have to feed him around 10:30 p.m., then again around 2:00 a.m., and then again between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m.
Fenn's school has the neatest summer activities planned. Today, the Little Ponderosa Zoo brought a petting zoo and ponies for the kids to ride. When I got to the school, I peaked into Fenn's room and they were all lining up at the back door to go outside. Fenn didn't see me, so I went around another way so I could snap some photos of Fenn coming out on the other side of the building. It was so cute... all the kids had on cowboy hats. (I posted one picture of Fenn in his hat the other day for his 18-month checkup post. It was taken as he was walking toward me. Scroll down a few posts if you want to see that photo.)
They took all the kids into a fenced-in play area where the zoo was setting up. All the kids sat down to wait. I stayed outside the fence for a few minutes taking pictures. Fenn kept looking back at me the whole time, while all the other kids were watching the pony rides being set up. One time, he stood up, pointed at me, and yelled "MA ma!" (emphasis on the first 'ma').
He finally sat in Miss Ashley's lap and stopped paying so much attention to what I was doing. He loves his Miss Ashley! We have even used her to babysit a couple of times. It's great because you don't worry as much since she already knows him so well (knows his moods, what he likes to eat, etc.).
It's funny, Fenn's class is made up mostly of girls (Ella Kate, Anabelle, Mary Frances, Sydney, Kassidy, Charlotte, Lily, and Ariyanna). And there are only two other boys (Noah and Fulton).
They got to ride the ponies first. Fenn got right on and started bouncing up and down, rocking back and forth, like he does on his Radio Flyer pony. But then he suddenly decided he was done and wanted off... before the ponies started moving. Then he wouldn't get back on. I finally had to force him to get back on, and once the ponies started moving, he was fine. He loved it. Not sure what was up with that!
After the pony ride, they went into the corral with the baby animals (a calf, a goat, a couple of sheep, and a turtle). They even got to feed the animals. One little girl actually fell down and landed in goat poop. They took her inside and put her in the utility sink to hose her off! And yes, it was THAT bad! I wish I'd had my camera, but had already put it away and was getting ready to leave.
Today, I went back to my OB/GYN for my 6-week checkup. Boone went along with me. I could have left him with Dan, but I wanted to take him with me, partly to show him off, and partly to get a photo of him with Dr. Cottam. I did the same thing with Fenn. {Click here to see the similar post of Fenn.} Dr. Cottam delivered both Fenn and Boone. With Fenn, who was born on a Monday, we were able to see Dr. Cottam the next day and that's when I took the photo. But because Boone was born on a Friday, Dr. Cottam was not working the next day. And I didn't think about taking the photo on Friday. Wonder why? Do you think our minds were on something else??? Anyway, I was upset the next day when I realized I had missed my opportunity. So, fast forward to today, when I was finally able to get the photo I wanted. I'm not sure of why it is so important to me to get this photo. I think there are several reasons. First of all, we had such a great birth experience both times and are so appreciative to Dr. Cottam for making it so memorable. And maybe one day Fenn and Boone will want to see who helped bring them into this world.
Funny story... Our labor and delivery nurse, Leigh, told us to be sure and say something about Dr. Cottam's t-shirt. Apparently, she had bought a t-shirt that she thought represented "being green"... you know, environmentally friendly. Well it turns out the image on the front of the t-shirt was actually a marijuana leaf! She had not even realized what it was until she got to work that day and some people pointed it out. So after that, she kept trying to cover it up. When she came in our room to get things started, we (of course) commented on her t-shirt and all had a good laugh about it.
After leaving my doctor's office, I decided to stop by the hospital (which is right next door) hoping Leigh Peterson, my awesome labor and delivery nurse, would be working. Same as above, I had missed my opportunity to get a photo with her because she wasn't working on Saturday (the day after Boone was born). Luckily, she was there! And she seemed genuinely pleased that we took the time to stop by. She just gushed over Boone!
She told me it was a good thing we stopped by when we did because she was leaving a few days later to go out to Los Angeles with her teenage son for three months. To make a long story short, it seems he got noticed by a talent scout a while back and had already been out once to meet with some people from Disney. They had asked him to come back this summer to meet with more talent agents, Disney representatives, etc. So be on the lookout for him. His name is Adam Peterson. Who knows what will happen... he may just end up being in a Disney production in the future. I have no idea what he looks like, but I'll be looking for his name.
Boone has been smiling at us for a couple of weeks. I think I mentioned that in an earlier post. These are a couple of the first smiles I was able to catch on camera. The second one is what we call Boone's Elvis Smile. "Thank you... thank you very much." He does his lip like that all the time.
Today, Fenn went in for his 18-month check-up. As usual, he was right on target with all of his major milestones.
These are his stats at 18 months & two weeks old:
Weight: 26 lbs. 11 oz. (59th %)
Length: 33 inches (67th %)
Head: 48.4 cm (66th %)
Compare this to his stats at 15 months & two weeks:
Weight: 24 lbs. 8 oz. (47th %)
Length: 31.25" (49th %)
Head: 47.6 cm (60th %)
I can't believe we have already been blessed to have him in our lives for a year and a half. He amazes me everyday with something new he has learned to do or say. Just a few new things about Fenn:
:: His vocabulary seems to have tripled since Boone's birth a little over a month ago. There are some words that are recognizable, and many that aren't. He sort of has his own language at the moment. He'll jabber on at times, repeating the same "phrase" over and over. If only we could understand what he's saying to us! Some new words that ARE recognizable are: Boone {Boooo}, cracker {KAA coo}, Aunt Angie {Aahh jhee}, juice {joosh}, Elmo {Meaoo MO}, up {uhhp}, and cup {kuhp}. There are several more, but I can't think of all of them right now. He also says 'please' and 'thank you', but you wouldn't know it if you heard it. We only know when he says it after being prompted.
:: When he's outside and hears an airplane or helicoptor overhead, he'll look up and make his airplane sound {he makes a buzzing sound}.
:: He loves his shape sorter toys. He has three different ones ~ one is the round Tupperware
version that has 10 shapes that you store inside and you have to pull the ball apart to get them out. Starting two or three months ago, we could show him which hole to put each shape in and he would put it in. We always say the name of the shape (circle, oval, triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, etc.). Well... in the last couple of weeks, I have noticed him actually picking up a shape and turning the Tupperware shape sorter ball around to find the appropriate hole for the shape. Also, if you ask him to pick up a certain shape, he can recognize most of them. However, sometimes he does get stumped by the ones that are very similar (circle vs. oval, pentagon vs. hexagon).
:: He loves to play on our bed. He'll climb up on one side (using the little plastic step stool I used while pregnant) and then climb down on the other side. Then he goes back to the first side and climbs up again. You get the picture! This can go on for a while.
:: The other morning he was watching a recorded Little Einsteins episode (we have at least 10 or 12 recorded!) and he picked up the remote and managed to change the channel. He brought the remote to me, saying "Uh oh!". That's his way of asking me to fix it.
:: He has started putting simple wooden puzzles together. He's had several puzzles for a while now, but mostly just liked dumping them on the floor and chewing on the pieces. But now he'll actually try to put the pieces back in place.
:: He is getting pretty good at going up and down stairs by himself. He can go down 3 or 4 steps on his own without holding onto anything. But it will be a while before mommy is comfortable letting him do it completely on his own. When I pick him up from daycare, I hold his hand while we're walking down the steps.
There's so much more! I can't put everything here. He is such a sweet child. And we are so proud of him. He's starting to sleep through the night again. {Something he stopped doing when Boone was born.} And he is generally so good with Boone. He likes to hug him and kiss him {that's when he's being good with him}. But he is only 18 months old and does occasionally get a little too rough with Boone. We have to constantly watch him to make sure he doesn't pat him too hard, sit on him, or throw something at him. We know he'll learn eventually. Right now, he's just a little too young to understand what it means to be gentle or why he has to be gentle.
This is Boone at One Month. This is the first installment in the "12-month onesie" series. If you're not familiar with what I did with Fenn, click on the link to Fenn at One Month Old to see his first photo. I saw this idea on Martha Stewart one morning shortly after Fenn was born. You take a picture of the baby in a 12-month onesie each month (in Boone's case, it will be on the 15th of each month) on the same background. At the end of the first year, you'll have 12 photos of the baby in the same 12-month onesie. Then you have the 12 photos matted and framed together. It is a good way to see how much they've grown from month to month. If you want to see Fenn's twelve photos, look over in the right-hand margin of the blog under "More Photos of Fenn". There's a link to his 12-month onesie photos. I'll set up another link for Boone's photos and add them each month.
It has been a busy and exhausting first month. First of all, as you can see from the last blog post, Boone spent his one month birthday in the hospital. I actually took this photo of him on June 15th in his hospital room. If you look closely at his right ankle, you can see his hospital ID bracelet. But luckily they removed the IV earlier that morning, so at least that's not in the picture. We're down to only one middle of the night feeding, but Boone still has not slept through the night. Fenn did it at around 6 or 7 weeks old, so we hope that means it will happen soon. He's a really good baby, but probably not quite as laid back as Fenn. It looks like (unfortunately) he got the Osborne temper. He gets mad when he's hungry or wants to be held... and has to wait for what he wants! I'm sorry to say that after three weeks of nursing exclusively, I gave up and started pumping and supplementing with formula. Like I said in an earlier post, he was a grazer like his big brother, and it was taking way too long to feed him. I needed some time to spend with Fenn and some time to rest or get a shower. A tired mommy doesn't make for a good mommy. Forget the advice about sleeping when they sleep. If you have any other children, that just doesn't apply any longer because they're not necessarily going to cooperate and sleep when the new baby sleeps. I will pump as long as I can, though. Anyway, as soon as I made the decision to stop nursing, I instantly knew it was the right decision for me. I know nursing is a beautiful thing, but it just wasn't working for me. I immediately felt relieved. Since nursing was taking so long, by the time I was done feeding him I was ready to get up and hand him over to someone else. I was never able to just sit and hold Boone and enjoy him. Now I can do that... now I can hold him and talk to him and smile at him. And guess what... he smiles back at me. He started smiling at us (I mean real smiles that weren't related to gas) around 3 weeks of age. That's two or three weeks earlier than Fenn smiled at us. If you'll look at the photo here, you can see a little smile. He has a really sweet, precious smile. As I get more photos of him smiling at us, I'll post those. As for Fenn's reaction to this new little being in our home, he seems to be adapting pretty well. He is really interested in Boone and likes to go in his room and look in his crib. He'll stand there and tell you "up", wanting you to pick him up so he can see in the crib. And I've already caught him trying to figure out how to climb up on the side of the crib to see Boone. He is also showing an interest in helping us with Boone. A couple of times, he has stuck Boone's pacifier back in his mouth.
So that's our first month with Boone. One quarter of it was spent in the hospital, and the rest of it is kind of a blur because we've been so exhausted. But we made it through it and can already see that things are settling down a little. Life is good! And we are truly blessed!
Boone was thinking it's not fair that Fenn gets to do everything first.... being the oldest and all. So... he decided to "One Up" Fenn and do something Fenn had not done yet.... spend some time in the hospital. Yes, that's right. Boone was admitted to the hospital on Thursday.
Backing up a bit, Boone's pediatrician detected a heart murmur at his 3-week check up the week before (June 3rd). No big deal... murmurs usually go away on their own. But she still scheduled him for an EKG the following week (on Thursday morning, June 11th) just to rule out any possible problems. Earlier last week (on Monday), Fenn was sent home from daycare with red dots on his tongue. Apparently, a few kids had been diagnosed the previous week with hand, foot, and mouth disease which is highly contagious. So we took Fenn to the doctor that day, but the doctor said he had some other kind of virus. Nothing you can do... just let it run its course. Fenn ran a temperature for a couple of days and then was fine. But by the time we knew Fenn was sick, Boone had already been exposed to the virus. On Thursday morning we took Boone for the EKG. We were told we would probably get the results the next day (after the cardiologist looked at the scans). Afterward, I was home with Boone and Dan had gone to work. Boone felt warm to me, so I took his temperature and it was 101.7.... high enough to call the doctor. I called and they got me in a couple of hours later. Because of Boone's age (under a month), they don't take chances with infants and immediately arranged for Boone to be admitted to Children's Hospital. Standard procedure is to run all kinds of tests (bloodwork, spinal fluid, etc.), give them IV fluids and antibiotics, and monitor them for a couple of days. {NOTE: We were under the impression we'd only be in the hospital for a couple of nights.} The first series of tests looked pretty good and pretty much pointed toward the same virus Fenn had. (The bloodwork would be repeated each morning after this.)
We decided for Dan to stay at the hospital the first night, and I would stay home with Fenn. Then I would stay with Boone on Friday night and Dan would stay home with Fenn. (Oh, on Friday afternoon we got the results of the EKG and they were negative. The murmur was gone.) The last time Boone's temperature was up was sometime in the early morning hours on Friday (4:00 AMish). After that, it stayed down without the need for Tylenol. But on Saturday morning, we learned we weren't going home that afternoon. The doctor wanted Boone to stay for a 3rd night. Apparently, Boone's white blood cell count was a bit low. Something to do with the Lymphocyte white blood cells, which fight viral infections, being low. And since the white blood cells were working so hard to fight the viral infection, this was affecting the Neutrophil white blood cells, which fight bacterial infections, and causing those levels to be low. And if they're low, then he might not be able to fight off a bacterial infection if exposed to anything. Anyway, because of all of this, they wanted to keep him another night and re-check things the next morning. They said that once his white blood cell counts start going up, they'll let Boone go home. They just really don't take any chances with infants.
So..... The third night turned in to a fourth night because the neutrophil count had not come up enough on Sunday morning. On Monday morning, the neutrophil count was up to 400. The magic number is 500, though, so we had to stay a fifth night. On Tuesday morning the neutrophil count was up to 800. We finally got to go home. The whole thing was exhausting to all of us. Dan and I continued to alternate who stayed at home with Fenn and who stayed at the hospital with Boone over all 5 nights. We didn't want either of them to have to be without either parent for too long. One of the most difficult things to me was having Boone hooked up to the IV. It made it very difficult to hold him and love on him because you were always concerned about bending the line and cutting off flow of the IV fluids and antibiotics, or just concerned about hurting him. Thankfully, on Monday morning he was done with the antibiotics and didn't need the IV fluids, so they unhooked him from everything. At least the last day, we could snuggle with him. UPDATE: On Friday, June 19th, Boone went for a follow-up visit with his pediatrician. He's doing great!
